Ike Mulberry in... “The Troublesome Trophy”

Ike MulberryIke Mulberry is an excellent footballer, in fact he is so good he's captain of the Sylvanian boys’ football team. This year they got all the way to the cup final and guess who scored the winning goal in the last minute? ....Yes of course, Ike Mulberry. He even got to take the trophy home, but that's when his troubles began. He was so happy after the match, celebrating with his team-mates, that he put the trophy in the top of his sports bag and forgot all about it.

Ike was carried on the shoulders of the other players all round the park and everyone was cheering and dancing, having a great time. After a well deserved drink of orange juice, Ike and the others went home to carry on celebrating. But in all the excitement, the one thing no-one noticed was that the base of the famous trophy had fallen out of Ike's bag and got lost in the long grass by the changing rooms.

Ike MulberryWhen Ike arrived home, he burst through the front door, ran into the lounge and pulled the large trophy out of his bag, putting it on the coffee table.

“Look Mum, we won and I scored the winning goal,” Ike shouted to his mum who was sitting in the armchair.

“That's brilliant Ike, well done,” his mother Mae congratulated him and gave him a big hug.

Ike looked proudly at his trophy and suddenly his heart sank.

“Where's the base of my trophy?” he said.

Ike had realised the base of his beautiful trophy wasn't where it was supposed to be. He grabbed his sports bag and started rummaging about in it.

Ike MulberryHe emptied its contents all over the floor, there were football boots, a towel, his lucky teddy bear, his jersey and shorts, but no trophy base.

“Ahhh!” screamed Ike as he started turning the lounge upside down looking for his trophy base. He was in the process of pulling all the cushions off the sofa when his mother came back into

the room.

“What on earth do you think you're doing young man,” Mae said sternly, “put that lot back right now and clear up these muddy football things.”

“Sorry Mum,” said Ike and with that he burst out crying, “I've lost the base of my trophy!”

Mae sat Ike down and wiping his tears away with her handkerchief, she helped him clear up

the room.

“Don't worry Ike,” Mae said sympathetically, “it will turn up.”

Ike MulberryBubba Babblebrook was daydreaming. He'd been sitting under a willow tree in the park for most of the morning, the sun was hot and there was a cooling breeze that felt nice as it ruffled his fur. Bubba decided it was time to go home. As he got up, he noticed something shining in the long grass over by the changing rooms.

“What's that?” Bubba said to himself as he went to investigate. He searched through the grass and there in the middle was a bright shiny frisbee.

“Wow!” said Bubba amazed. He could even see his reflection in his new find – it was that shiny.

“I must try this out,” said an excited Bubba and with that he threw his new frisbee into the air. It floated perfectly and went for what seemed like miles.

Ike MulberryBubba gave chase and picked up his new toy, ready to have another go. He spent the rest of the morning throwing his Frisbee, it was great fun. Bubba was ready to try the longest throw he'd ever done. He placed his feet far enough apart, took a deep breath and with a big swing of his arm launched his toy high into the air. Then disaster struck. A freak gust of wind caught the frisbee in its grasp and it travelled on and on and on. Bubba lost sight of it as it disappeared over a nearby hill.

Ike MulberryKaty Norwood had been given the job of playing the big drum in the next school band at the school fair the next day. Katy was good at most things but playing the drum was one thing she needed to practise. Her mother and father had had enough of her banging and crashing and had suggested that she practise somewhere away from everyone, like in the park. Katy was beginning to really get the hang of playing her drum. She could now keep a good beat and march up and down at the same time. She was banging away when out the corner of her eye she saw something flying over the hill. The object hit a tree and bounced off, landing at her feet. She looked at it quizzically and then realised that it was a cymbal. What luck, just what she needed for her drum kit!

Ike MulberryKaty tied a stick to her drum and balanced her new cymbal on the top; it made a great crashing noise when she hit it. She thought to herself, “I'm going to be a big hit at the school fair.”

Katy played her drum all the way back home and when she arrived she left her drum kit in the kitchen by the back door and went upstairs to wash her hands ready for dinner.

Ike MulberryBrie Norwood, Katy's mother, had been picking beans in the garden. As she came in the back door she fell head first over Katy's drum kit and there was a huge crash. Brie picked herself up, shouted at Katy for leaving her drum kit in such a silly place and then got on with the job of cooking dinner. She had lots of pots and pans all boiling away at once and there was a lovely smell drifting out of the Norwood kitchen window.

Ike MulberryBut Brie couldn't find one of her saucepan lids. “Oh! There it is on the floor under the table,” she muttered as she picked it up. Brie noticed that her saucepan lid was very shiny today, but she placed it on the top of the pan of beans and went to call the rest of the family to get ready for dinner. As the pressure built up in the saucepan, the water began to bubble over and all of a sudden the pressure got so high that it blew the ill fitting lid straight off the pan and out of the open kitchen window.

Ike MulberryIt just so happened that Byron Underwood was walking down the lane by the Norwood's home. He was carrying three planks of wood perched on his shoulder whilst carrying a bag of string and a set of wheels from his sister's old pram, which he was going to use to make a go-cart.

Ike MulberryAs he walked, there in the middle of the lane, for no reason whatsoever, was a steering wheel all shiny and bright. Byron picked it up and carried on along the lane, happy with his find.

Later on, after building his new go-cart, Byron decided to take it right to the top of the hill to have his best ride ever!

Ike Mulberry“Ye-haa!” he shouted as he sped down the hill, screaming with delight. Just then, one of his front wheels bounced over a large stone, causing him to lose his balance and the whole go-cart to flip up into the air.

Luckily for Byron, he wasn't going too fast so he was okay after his little accident, however his go-cart wasn't so lucky!

One of the wheels was buckled and some of the strings that held it together snapped, but Byron collected all the bits that were left and made his way home to see if he could repair the damage. Unfortunately, he hadn't seen his steering wheel rolling off down the hill.

Ike MulberryTilly Dappledawn was entering the fancy dress competition at the school fair. She had decided to go as an olde worlde knight. She had made a

lot of her costume already, using an old cereal box and some tin foil. Her brother Radish had also made her a sword out of a broom handle. The only thing she needed to complete her costume was a shield. Tilly, who had been collecting some milk from the local shop, decided to take a short cut through the park and as it was such a lovely evening she decided to sit down to watch the sunset. As the sun snuggled into the clouds ready for a night's sleep, Tilly was suddenly aware of something resting against her leg. When she looked down, there to her wonder was a knight's shield.

“Excellent, that's just what I need to complete my costume,” said a very happy Tilly.

Ike MulberryThe next day at the school fair she was overjoyed to win first prize for her knight's costume.

She was presented with a big ice cream for winning, but she couldn't eat it properly, because she was still wearing her knight's helmet!

Ike MulberryAlthough Theodora, Tilly's mother, was busy running the knick-knack stall, Tilly asked her to look after her costume while she ate her ice cream and went for a look round the fair. Theodora put Tilly's costume under the stall and carried on busily serving all her customers.

Ike MulberryCandy Mulberry was also at the fair, and she too had entered the fancy dress competition. Her dad, Elma, had bought her a candy floss just because she was named after one. She was walking round the fair having a great time. As she was visiting Theodora's knick-knack stall she noticed there, under the table, was just what she had been looking for - a serving tray for her dolls. She handed Theodora her pocket money; it was just the right amount to purchase the tray.

Ike MulberryLater that day Candy went home with her dad and he gave her a piggy-back ride some of the way, because she was very tired after having so much fun. By the time they arrived home Candy was fast asleep on her dad's back, so he carried his little girl up the stairs and put her to bed. Elma went back downstairs and put all the bits Candy had bought at the fair on the coffee table ready for her when she woke up.

Ike MulberryMae, Candy's mother, was in the middle of clearing up, as her son Ike had made a terrible mess of the lounge the day before. She moved Candy's stuff off the coffee table, so that she could polish it and without thinking, she picked up Candy's doll's serving tray and placed it under Ike's football trophy. Then she carried on cleaning up.

Ike MulberryThe next morning, Ike came down to breakfast and he followed his usual routine of going over to the coffee table to give his trophy a loving rub. He was amazed when this morning, the famous missing cup base was back where it belonged! Ike couldn't believe it and no-one in the family could figure out how the missing base came back all on its own - but we know better don't we?
